The Tesla Model Y becomes a plug-in hybrid thanks to Obrist

In Munich, this Tesla Model Y, which has passed through the hands of Orbrit, has been seen with a combustion engine added to charge the batteries.

A few years ago, several manufacturers offered a solution for electric cars that sparked some controversy. It involved a combustion engine that supplied electricity to the battery, allowing the car to be recharged without needing a charging point. However, that engine meant the advantage gained by the electric car was lost, since the combustion engine produced emissions.

This system could be found on models such as the BMW i3 and the Opel Ampera, although it was ultimately dropped by most brands. Still, there are staunch defenders of these hybrid systems, as was demonstrated at the Munich Motor Show. At this event, one of these engines could be seen installed in none other than a Tesla Model Y.

It should be said that this is not an initiative of Tesla, but of the company specialising in hybrid drivetrains Obrist. It has installed its HyperHybrid system, which consists of a combustion engine connected to the battery, supplying electrical energy to it and allowing an extended range.

The design of this hybrid system is based on an improved combustion engine. It is more sustainable than those traditionally used in this type of system. The presence of this engine would mean smaller batteries can be used, which would considerably lower the price of electric vehicles.

The emissions of these engines are noticeably lower than other types of engines. This is because they do not deliver power to the wheels, but are used as an electricity generator. There is no increase in power and it maintains a steady operating rhythm, so there are no rises and falls in emissions. Furthermore, according to the company, using synthetic fuels could reduce these emissions even further or eliminate them altogether.

In the case of the Tesla Model Y seen at the Munich Motor Show, it is equipped with a 1.0-litre two-cylinder engine, together with an electric motor and a smaller battery than the one offered on the standard Model Y. The price of the kit is around 2,400 euros, compared with the 12,000 euros that an electric mobility kit can cost. A major advantage that could bring the price down considerably.

Is this a good way to make electric cars more affordable, even if some of the sustainability offered by electric cars has to be sacrificed? It is something that will surely be part of the mobility debates in the years to come.
