The Mercedes AMG PureSpeed is the car many will want, but only a few will be able to drive

This special model from AMG has a bold, eye-catching design, will be limited to just 250 units and will cost around one million euros.

There are brands aimed at high-end buyers, and there are sub-brands that break that barrier from above and go after buyers at an even higher level. Mercedes-AMG has been wanting to do this for some time, but now it has reached a new milestone with its concept car PureSpeed. It was unveiled ahead of the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix and previews what will become the Mythos.

This model, now in its final phase and ready for production, is a two-seater based on the Mercedes-AMG SL, which seats four. In this version, the two rear seats have been removed, turning it into a two-seater. But it is a two-seater unlike anything we know, showcasing one of the elements that has popularised Formula 1, the HALO.

As a roadster, it has no windscreen, A-pillars, roof or side windows, which normally protect the occupants. Since this model has a clearly sporty spirit, a more than suitable solution has been found: fitting the HALO technology. It consists of a reinforced, curved bar running through the cabin from front to rear, which provides rollover protection. At the rear, two humps have also been added, which likewise help keep the occupants safe.

The exterior of this model is quite striking. The Panamericana grille has been removed and a front end shaped like a shark’s nose has been added, finished with a carbon-fibre spoiler. We know nothing about the interior, but we are sure it will not disappoint the driver who sits behind the wheel. Some details can be seen in the images accompanying the article, but no further information has been offered for the time being.

As for what the engine might bring, the possibility of a PHEV powertrain is ruled out. We will learn all these details closer to its launch, in 2025. For now, we can only imagine that it will have the 4.0-litre V8 engine, delivering 585 CV, although it is not ruled out that it could be tuned to exceed that figure. And the price, which is expected to be close to one million euros for each of the 250 units to be built.
