The Mercedes-Benz G-Class will be electrified and unveiled at the Munich Motor Show

Next September we will get to meet the new Mercedes-Benz EQG, the electric version of the legendary G-Class.

The star brand is working on a fully electric version of its legendary G-Class. Ola Kallenius, the brand’s chief executive, has described it as “inevitable”. Some German sources such as MbPassion have claimed that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG could make its public debut, in the form of a concept, next September at the Munich Motor Show.

Rumours about the expansion and growth of the G-Class began in October 2020, when Mercedes-Benz confirmed its plans to make the G-Class a brand in its own right. More recently, it was reported that Mercedes-Benz had selected the next Munich Motor Show to formally announce its three new sub-brands: AMG, Maybach and G-Class.

Are we looking at the brand’s next 100% electric model?

While it is true that a fully electric version of its legendary off-roader is something drivers are eager for, the new model will arrive as a concept, but everything points to it reaching production much sooner than we think. Leaked documents from last April made it very clear that the future G-Class of Mercedes-Benz will be renamed Mercedes-Benz EQC, in line with the rest of the German brand’s fully electric models.

Those same documents also revealed that drivers will be able to choose between two versions: the Mercedes-Benz EQC 560 and the Mercedes-Benz EQG 580. The model will also feature a new, dedicated modular platform, as is to be expected of any Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The new EQG will be all-wheel drive with three differentials. Everything points to the model having an electric motor on each axle, delivering combined outputs of 520 CV and a maximum torque of 828 Nm. All of this is paired with a 108 kWh battery mounted in the floor. This could offer ranges close to 500 kilometres.

As we have seen previously, electric versions such as the Mercedes-Benz EQA, the Mercedes-Benz EQB or the Mercedes-Benz EQC have a very distinctive bodywork that sets them apart from their combustion-engined versions. We will have to wait until September to learn more about the future Mercedes-Benz EQG, but we expect it to retain its angular bodywork and off-road proportions.
