The Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ pair will arrive with major updates, both in terms of styling and, above all, mechanically

Although it is far away, not so much in time but more so in distance, the Tokyo Motor Show represents an exceptional opportunity for manufacturers, especially local ones, to present their most notable proposals.

We have recently learned that Mitsubishi, following its trend of becoming a manufacturer almost exclusively focused on SUVs, will present a new plug-in hybrid vehicle at the Tokyo show.

Likewise, Subaru could surprise us twice over. On the one hand, we could see under the spotlights a concept car that displays the basic lines of the future Subaru WRX STI, whose engine could prove even more innovative in the next generation of the brand’s current sports saloon.

Whatever the case, the other novelty which, according to our colleagues at the Japanese website Best Car, is that for the Tokyo Motor Show, both Subaru and Toyota will make public the first prototype of the new generation of their respective BRZ and GT 86.

The new Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ

Although, in our market, both models have not received the attention that their handling and driving merit, and the uncertainty surrounding a next generation has gone through moments of crisis, both Toyota and Subaru appear to be moving forward, once again, in building a successor for the affordable sports car of both firms.

Thus, despite the incompatibility of both architectures, the new platforms of Toyota, known by its acronym TNGA, and of Subaru, SGP, the twin pair would remain on the one that currently underpins both models and which takes the Pleiades constellation as its brand image at its headquarters in Gunma, Subaru, but with modifications and updates that allow new solutions to be adopted.

Although it is expected that, once again, both models will have rear-wheel drive based on mechanical traction on the rear axle, the engine of the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ duo could also debut a new block.

According to Best Car’s sources, the mechanical heart that would give life to the new generation would remain a boxer configuration but with a displacement of 2.4 litres. The same one already fitted to the new Subaru Legacy and Ascent, neither of which is on sale in Spain, whose internal code is FA24.

These cars have a power output of up to 260 CV thanks to an additional turbocharging system.

New engine, more power

As for the new Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ, it seems they would remain faithful to their mechanical layout of horizontally opposed cylinders, with natural aspiration, that is, atmospheric, but with an increase in power over the current two-litre engine, which would go from 200 that we know up to 220 or 240 CV.

Whatever the case, it seems that fans of these two cars will be able to enjoy not only a new one, but that the new generation of the Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ will arrive with an increase in power and in fuel consumption efficiency, and that its sale would not be before 2021.
