The new Land Rover Defender is arriving, although for now only in the USA and Canada

The new Land Rover Defender is putting the final touches on its details ahead of its presentation, which will take place in 2019, with production starting in 2020

If we write about the best off-roaders in history, the Land Rover Defender is one of those vehicles destined to fill several pages, because despite a design that has changed little throughout its existence, the Defender has improved over time, enhancing qualities that were already exceptional for 4×4 use. Unfortunately, the introduction of Euro 6 regulations ended, in the worst possible way, a unique and legendary vehicle.

Hope lingered slightly, as some internal problems extended the life of the Land Rover Defender by one year, specifically until 2016, the year its production definitively ceased. We knew a successor was in the works, but judging by what has already happened with other pure 4x4s, the new Defender is likely to no longer have the essence, the charisma and the off-road capability it had in its first life.

Although I hope I am wrong, since Land Rover claims that the new Defender will have great capabilities on asphalt and on dirt, at least based on what they have been able to verify with the “mules” already undergoing testing. But despite the fact that it is and will remain a highly valued and appreciated vehicle anywhere in the world, Land Rover has confirmed that the new Defender will only be available in the United States and Canada from 2020, at least from the outset, and in principle it is not expected in Europe. Let us hope the British brand changes its mind and we have the chance to buy it in Europe too.

In the images that Land Rover has provided us, which you can see in this post, the Defender is only seen under a thick layer of camouflage, although despite this its lines and large number of flat surfaces can be clearly discerned, so we can say that the new model will evoke the boxy design of its predecessor. A design that is further reinforced by a distinctive high waistline and prominent wheel arches, suggesting a design that conveys an imposing presence.

On the technology front, as you can imagine, the new Land Rover Defender will no longer be the spartan vehicle we knew, now incorporating the latest advances in connectivity and assistance systems. Mechanically they have not revealed any progress either, although as you can imagine under its bonnet we will find powerful engines, and there is even talk of hybrid versions. To learn all the details of the new Defender we will have to wait a little longer, since Land Rover will unveil it along with all its details in 2019.
