Mercedes-AMG has finally unveiled the CLA and A 45, the most powerful variants of both models, which arrive with Drift Mode and up to 421 CV.

The wait is finally over. After witnessing countless alleged mules and teasers, the Mercedes-AMG CLA and A 45 are finally here, ready to revolutionise and reign over the sporty compact segment. Until now, that position was held by the Audi RS3 with its 400 CV, but the star brand has set its sights on the throne with its new offerings, which are capable of taking the concept of the hot hatchback to the next level by declaring a maximum output of 421 CV.

However, Mercedes-AMG has also considered all of its potential customers, which is why two variants of both models will be offered, just as with the rest of the range. It is true that the more modest CLA and A 35 will continue to be presented as the entry-level AMGs. Alongside the 45 badge appears the S designation, which represents the most powerful and radical version.

A more sporty design

But it is not only the mechanical side that changes in the new Mercedes-AMG CLA and A 45; their styling changes too. To keep in step with their new power level and to offer some differences compared with the 35 AMGs, both models have adopted a series of features capable of accentuating their styling and emphasising their presence on the asphalt.

The now characteristic Panamericana grille, the identity hallmark of the most powerful AMGs, takes charge of the front together with side canards that also benefit aerodynamics. A more prominent front bumper continues to add doses of sportiness thanks to two air intakes of considerable size, but it is at the rear where the two vehicles take different paths.

In the case of the CLA, we find a duck-tail style spoiler that continues the AMG spirit. However, the A 45 has opted to take it further with an even more voluminous wing that sits on the upper part of the tailgate. The rear bumper, in addition to adopting a new diffuser, features a quad exhaust outlet, just as the models with the 53 badge on their rear do.

Up to two power levels and Drift Mode

As we have mentioned, it will be possible to choose between two power levels when configuring both the CLA and the A 45. The “S” designation will be the one that distinguishes them and allows us to access the extra power that the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine hidden beneath the bonnet is capable of producing.

The more “modest” variant will be capable of delivering 387 CV, while in the 45 S that figure rises to 421 CV, coming dangerously close to performance cars of the calibre of the Audi RS5 or BMW M4. To distribute all that power there is an 8-speed DCT-8G dual-clutch automatic gearbox and the intelligent 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, which will allow engagement of a Drift Mode that sends all the power exclusively to the rear axle.
