The new Mitsubishi Colt electric is on its way
It will arrive in 2027 and is expected to be essentially a Japanese version of the new Renault 5 E-Tech electric that we already know, sharing much of its components.
Although the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is not currently going through its best moment, the truth is that collaboration between the three manufacturers remains stable, as reflected in the launch of new current and future models. This would be precisely the case of the eighth generation of the Mitsubishi Colt, which is expected to reach the market in 2027 with a new model that, on this occasion, will be fully electric, using Renault technology.
According to French media reports, the new Colt will share a platform with the electric Renault 5 E-Tech, just as the new generation of the Nissan Micra will. For several years now, Mitsubishi has chosen not to develop its own models for the European market, and this looks set to continue.

In 2020, the Japanese company announced its intention to leave the European market in 2022, although it ultimately reconsidered its decision. Since then, the Japanese manufacturer’s vehicles on the continent have been based on Renault models and built at the French manufacturer’s European plants. This is the case of the Mitsubishi ASX, which is essentially a Renault Captur, and whose production takes place in Spain. Likewise, the seventh generation of the Mitsubishi Colt is derived from the Renault Clio, and both models are produced at the Bursa plant in Turkey.
Brother of the electric Renault 5 E-Tech
The new generation of the Colt will not, however, be based once again on the Clio. This is because Renault has decided not to offer electric versions of this model in order to avoid competing with the Renault 5 E-Tech, and Mitsubishi wants the new Colt to be an exclusively electric model. It remains to be seen, however, how much differentiation the Japanese manufacturer will give the new Colt compared with the electric Renault 5 E-Tech. What does seem certain is that the Colt will use the propulsion technology of the French manufacturer’s electric city car, probably offering the same two battery packs of 40 and 52 kWh.

It should also be noted that the new Colt will not be the only electric Mitsubishi vehicle based on Renault technology. The next generation of the Eclipse Cross SUV, which will be presented in September, will be an adaptation of the electric Renault Scenic E-Tech, produced at the Douai plant on the AmpR Medium platform.
