The next BMW 3 Series is shedding its camouflage

First it was the 7 Series turn, then the 5 Series, and the next to get a new generation, as is traditional at BMW, will be the 3 Series, which will carry the code F30. And, evidently, it will inherit some of the design traits of its bigger siblings. Proof of this are the spy images taken by a reader named Ernie Rogers, who received them from the Dutch magazine Autoweek, showing the renewed test saloon in Santa Barbara, California.

They show that it has less camouflage than a few months ago, and the first details of its bodywork are already visible. To begin with, the most immediately striking thing is the obvious increase in size in length and width, which will also lead to more interior space.

Although they are not very clear, the front headlights will be lower than before, similar to those of the 5 Series F10. Likewise, the mirrors and door handles change shape, becoming longer. Finally, at the rear the taillights can be seen to adopt the style of those on the 5 Series, and the lower part of the bumper will no longer have the indentation of the 3 Series E90, but will be smoother.

As for engines, for now it is known that the petrol petrol range will consist, from bottom to top, of a 318i with 150 CV, a 320i with 180, and two other versions with a turbocharged 2-litre unit producing 220 and 260 horsepower. Later the new 1.35-litre engine will appear in a new 316i… whose power is still unknown.

All of them will carry the EfficientDynamics package to reduce consumption and emissions. Likewise, the indispensable M3 and the estate version Touring will not be missing. The new 3 Series, however, will not go on sale until 2012, because next year BMW will pause the rejuvenation of its saloons to give prominence to the new 1 Series.
