The SEAT Ibiza turns 42, a milestone that comes with more than 6 million units sold
The SEAT Ibiza celebrates 42 years and receives a restyling that brings more equipment and new colours that reinforce its youthful image, yet with style.

When a model manages to stay on the market for more than 40 years, we know we are dealing with a car that has broken the mould and become a true classic and one of the most sought-after by buyers. The SEAT Ibiza has not only reached 40 years, but has gone on to reach 42, a figure that confirms this assessment.
Over these four decades and then some, the Ibiza has reinvented itself several times and has established itself in the market as one of the most popular models of the Spanish brand. All the changes it has undergone over these 42 years can be seen in the video that accompanies this article, which, thanks to a morphing effect, shows how it has evolved from that memorable first generation to the latest iteration of the model.

The most important facts about the SEAT Ibiza
The SEAT Ibiza has been the best-selling model in the brand’s history. Around six million units have been sold. This has allowed SEAT to benefit from all the innovations introduced on the Ibiza, which have also been applied to other SEAT models.

SEAT IBIZA 40 ANIVERSARIO
In just five years, an Ibiza Crono became the 500,000th unit built. This happened on 7 July 1988. The one-millionth unit was an Ibiza New Style built in 1991. Only one other model from the brand had reached that figure, the SEAT 127/Fura. Just six years later, the two-millionth SEAT Ibiza was built.
In 2004, the first 20 years of the model were celebrated, by which time more than 3.3 million units had been built. The six-millionth unit was built in 2024, just as it turned 40.
As for its success in other countries, around 120,000 units had been exported, and it was a first-generation Ibiza that became the one-millionth car exported by SEAT. With five million units produced, around 3.5 million Ibizas had been shipped to other markets.
Five generations of the SEAT Ibiza
Five generations of the SEAT Ibiza have been built. The first arrived in 1984 and cost 988,157 pesetas, about €5,938 at today’s exchange rate. It used engines of different displacements (0.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.5 fuel-injected, 1.7 and 1.7 fuel-injected petrol, and a 1.7-litre diesel), with outputs between 44 and 105 CV. This first generation featured several special editions, such as the Ibiza del Sol. This special series was followed by the special editions Ibiza Paco Rabanne, Disco, Special and the SEAT Ibiza Serie Olímpica, which was presented in February 1992.
The second generation was unveiled at the 1993 Barcelona Motor Show. It became the first vehicle built at the Martorell plant. Physically, it gained 20 centimetres in length and introduced a new platform that shaped the new Ibiza. The Ibiza also marked SEAT’s return to rally competition, which allowed the brand to launch a sportier variant of the model.
It also saw the arrival of the Ibiza CUPRA R, which featured a 1.8 20VT engine producing 180 CV, the first turbocharged petrol engine in an Ibiza. The third generation launched in 2001 and ended in 2009, with 1,172,504 units sold. During this period the Ibiza FR was born, equipped with a 1.9 TDI diesel engine producing 130 CV and a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 150 CV.
Another important version of the Ibiza from that generation was the Ibiza Cupra R, which had a 180 CV TSI petrol engine and a 160 CV TDI diesel. Only 200 units of this variant were built, making it the most powerful in its class. In 2008 the fourth generation was launched. This new Ibiza offered more technology and even added a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, and from 2017 onwards it added a 6.5-inch central screen.
The fifth generation of the Ibiza is renewed this year
The fifth generation is currently on the market. And in 2026 it receives an update that brings its design and equipment into a new era. New body colours, such as Liminal Red, Oniric Lake and Hypnotic Yellow, give it a more contemporary look. The new SEAT Sound sound system delivers a purer sound and once again makes it a model that captivates younger buyers.
