The Sono Sion faces its first crash test

The Sono Sion has passed its first safety test, and these are the results.

Sono Sion

The Sono Sion has undergone its first crash test and has shown that its solar panels will not harm people. This is possible because its solar cells are based on polymers. The German company Sono Motors has confirmed that its Sion has successfully completed its first crash test. The 50 km/h test confirmed that the panels do not pose an additional threat to users.

The Sion is covered with polymer-based solar panels patented by Sono, which did not shatter during the test, which simulates a severe frontal collision. According to the carmaker, this means the Sion poses no danger to passengers or other road users because of its solar panels.

Thanks to this crash test and its extensive simulations, Sono expects the model to meet all legal requirements for passenger and pedestrian safety, despite the novel technology being implemented in its bodywork.

Markus Volmer, CTO of Sono, has stated that “after years of successfully running crash simulations, we are very proud to see that our solar technology delivers the same satisfactory, high-quality results in real life. We want our customers to be able to drive with the peace of mind of knowing that the solar technology in their Sion not only charges the battery for free, but also meets the highest safety standards.”

It is worth mentioning that, thanks to these solar panels, the Sion can travel up to 245 km per week under ideal conditions. This can translate into notable savings for families. In addition to this technology, Sono Motors plans to equip the Sion with advanced driver-assistance technology. Sono expects to offer systems such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, rear parking assist and a rear camera, among others.

The car will receive wireless updates and will introduce cruise control after the model enters production. Volmer added, “we want to guarantee maximum safety, comfort and efficiency for Sion customers. By integrating cutting-edge technology, we plan to make the Sion competitive by the start of production and ready for the future.”
