The structure of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will be 28% more rigid

We continue with the progressive revelation of technical details of the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro. First we talked about the Alpha platform, then about the mass reduction, and this week it’s time to define how rigid the sixth generation of the American sports car will be.

Chevrolet’s engineers have managed to make the increase in this measure that its internal structure experiences compared with the previous model reach 28%. This greater torsional rigidity has allowed the steering and the suspension of the vehicle to be adjusted with greater precision, since it no longer compromised the flexibility of the chassis on which it is mounted.

The aforementioned improvement is added to the fact that the structure itself will be lighter, because the engineers have found multiple ways to remove unsprung masses. This factor has, in turn, contributed to sizing components such as the wheels and the brakes with greater care.

These last two appear in the two new photographs released by Chevrolet. The variant with which the 2016 Camaro will be presented will feature five double-spoke wheels fitted with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres, and Brembo-branded brakes.

According to the General Motors brand, the advances described above have been achieved without causing the Camaro to “put on weight” excessively, thanks to advances in computer-generated experimental models. The project’s engineering lead, Jim Karlavage, stresses that these techniques offer the possibility of working with greater accuracy on these aspects of the vehicle’s development.

Karlavage also insists that the improvements implemented in the 2016 Camaro will translate into a much more agile and precise driving experience. As always, we will have to wait for the first reviews to know whether Chevrolet has kept its promise. The next appointment with the sports car will take place on Monday 20 April.
