The Subaru Outback gets a facelift for 2015

Subaru Outback 2015 (8)All-new Subaru Outback

The fifth generation of the Subaru Outback will be presented in Spain in March 2015, where more details of the new model will be revealed, although pre-sales will begin at the end of January of that same year. After the latest tests carried out by Euro NCAP, it has achieved the maximum score, which is a point in its favour if what we are looking for is a safe vehicle, among other relevant things.

It has achieved the maximum score in the Euro NCAP tests. It maintains the essence of an SUV/crossover with estate bodywork that has made it stand out over the years since its launch. It adopts the new hexagonal grille, LED lights both in the front and rear lamps, has improved aerodynamics, a higher level of visibility and also grows in its exterior dimensions, reaching 4.81 metres in length, 1.84 metres in width, and the height of 1.60 metres remains unchanged.

Without doubt, one of the features to highlight is its off-road capabilities. With a ground clearance of 20 centimetres, leaving the tarmac is no problem for the Outback. It also adds elements such as the specific X-Mode traction control system, which improves the vehicle’s behaviour when grip problems arise or vary. The Hill Descent downhill control system, together with the Hill Assist System device and the four-wheel drive Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system, allow it to climb and descend slopes with sufficient grip and complete safety.

The VDC stability and traction control system incorporates for the first time the Active Torque Vectoring function, improving cornering especially on tarmac surfaces, for which, when necessary, it brakes the inside wheel and distributes torque among all four wheels. Combined with more precise power steering, the redesigned suspension and the new chassis, this increases agility and reduces body roll.

It brings together the best qualities of an SUV/crossover and an estate. The changes of the new generation are also evident inside. Occupant space increases, largely thanks to the variation in exterior dimensions. Higher quality materials and finishes are noticeable. Equipment grows, and the Starlink system is improved, offering more intuitive operation than the previous model. It features a large multifunction touchscreen with the latest mobile device connectivity and which also integrates the navigation system.

The centre console is freed from an excess of buttons thanks to a new multifunction steering wheel, from which the phone, audio system and cruise control can be operated without unnecessarily taking your eyes off the road.

The engine options available for the new Outback are: a diesel 2.0-litre engine producing 150 CV, output unchanged from the previous model, and a 2.5-litre petrol engine that increases its output to 175 CV (3 CV more than the previous generation). Both feature four cylinders and a boxer configuration, so representative of Subaru and fitted across its entire range, and comply with the strict Euro 6 standard. They can be combined with a six-speed manual gearbox or a Lineartronic automatic with seven preset ratios and paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

It will feature the Eyesight system for the first time in Europe. For the first time in Europe, the Outback will feature the third generation of the Eyesight system, which comes as standard on all versions with automatic gearbox. This system uses two high-definition colour cameras with a semiconductor metal-oxide sensor (CMOS). They are capable of distinguishing moving objects (cars, pedestrians and cyclists) from static objects (guardrails) and also from other metallic objects, as well as brake lights of other cars travelling ahead.

If the system detects that the driver is not going to react in time to avoid an accident, it acts on the engine, transmission and brakes, offering pre-collision braking up to 50 km/h, adaptive cruise control up to 180 km/h and lane change alert. It issues an audible and visual warning beforehand.
