An electric hypercar is not in Porsche’s plans, according to Andreas Preuninger, head of the company’s GT division at the German brand.

Although the next Porsche hypercar is unlikely to arrive before 2025, the head of the Gran Turismo division, Andreas Preuninger, has stated that the car may not be fully electric.

In an interview with Car and Driver, Preuninger said the company is not currently developing a new hypercar, but that it will do so in the future. “We currently have no new hypercar in development. That said, would it make sense to produce another hybrid?” said the head of Porsche’s Gran Turismo division.

At this year’s Geneva Motor Show, Porsche made it clear that the most special models, such as the Porsche 918, are launched every ten years, so we will still have to wait until 2025 to see the brand’s new hypercar.

“As a company, we have to build electric and hybrid cars, but perhaps this doesn’t make sense in a Gran Turismo. At least not for now. If someone decides that cars will be hybrids in the future, the story will change,” Preuninger said.

However, the head of the GT models also stated that Porsche must be a leading manufacturer of propulsion systems and so they are already planning the development of electric cars. The German company will continue to improve the technology in its first zero-emission car, the Mission E, a model that will arrive in 2020.

Other manufacturers, which compete with Porsche in this segment, have already launched hypercars such as the Aston Martin Red Bull Valkyrie or the Mercedes-AMG Project One.

Currently, the Porsche 918 Spyder (the only hypercar in the company’s lineup) is one of the fastest in its category. Thanks to its hybrid powertrain that combines a 4.6-litre V8 engine with an electric motor, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. We’ll have to wait and see whether these performance figures are surpassed by Porsche’s future hypercar.
