We will have to wait to see it on European roads, but the Volkswagen Atlas has already been unveiled to the world. The brand’s new SUV has very interesting features but, for the time being, it will only be available in the United States and has been designed to be a vehicle that appeals to Americans and is a real option for them. It was known under the name Teramont and has undergone several changes before becoming the Atlas, which will be presented in style at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Although before its arrival at this event it was shown to the world at a presentation from which we have been able to obtain a large gallery of images, which you can see at the end of this article. The family SUV is a very sought-after segment among American buyers, so the German brand has decided to take a step forward in this segment and, as far as we can see, the model meets the requirements that this market demands.

It is manufactured in Chattanooga (Tennessee), which already shows that they are trying to make it as local as possible, something Americans take very much into account. To build it, they have relied on the MQB architecture of Volkswagen, which allows it to reach a length of 5,037 millimetres, a width of 1,979 mm and a height of 1,767 mm. This makes it the largest car that Volkswagen sells in the United States, a market where size matters.

For American users, a pair of engines has been devised that offer the power they demand. The first engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, which delivers 238 CV through the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The second, more powerful one has a displacement of 3.6 litres, with six cylinders delivering 280 CV, paired with the same eight-speed automatic gearbox. The first can only be configured with front-wheel drive, although for the second you can choose between front-wheel drive and 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Inside there are three rows of seats, with the two rear ones folding down. Seven adults can sit comfortably in the model, with enough space for everyone’s luggage. The driver will enjoy Volkswagen’s digital cockpit, with connectivity systems that allow connection to Android and iOS phones, so occupants can always use the apps installed on them.

A 12-speaker Fender sound system and a 480 W amplifier will provide the atmosphere needed to thoroughly enjoy journeys in the Volkswagen Atlas, which also features the brand’s driver assistance systems. These improve driving safety and allow drivers to feel more confident behind the wheel.
