The Volkswagen Golf 8 keeps its reputation intact by earning 5 Euro NCAP stars

The Volkswagen Golf 8 stays at the top of its segment after earning five stars in the Euro NCAP tests, the highest possible score.

It was only a matter of time before the final stretch of 2019 came face to face with one of the most demanding safety tests in the world: Euro NCAP. The eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf, one of the most anticipated updates this year, has already faced the crash tests, where it earned a five-star rating. With this result, the favourite child of Wolfsburg will remain at the top of its segment thanks both to its good value for money and to a level of safety on par with its predecessors.

However, before earning the top rating, the German compact had to go through a series of tests designed to simulate violent impacts. In this way, engineers aim to assess the damage that both the occupants of the car and a pedestrian could suffer in the event of a collision, with this last scenario being the subject of study and the reason behind the development of important safety innovations.

In the first instance, we observe a frontal impact at a speed of 64 km/h. Despite its severity, we can see how the bonnet absorbs most of the force generated and prevents it from penetrating the cabin at all costs. Immediately, both the front and side airbags deploy, providing even more protection for the occupants.

After a second frontal impact at 50 km/h, another side impact takes place at the same speed. The result is very similar, since the doors and the chassis work to stop the force of the impact and reduce as much as possible the injuries the occupants could suffer. Finally, a side impact against a pole at 32 km/h is carried out.

To complete the tests, the Euro NCAP engineers evaluated the safety of the seats, the protection for pedestrians in the event of a collision, and the various driver assistance systems fitted to the new Volkswagen Golf. After all, protection for front-seat passengers has been estimated at 95%; protection for child occupants has been calculated at 89%, a figure that drops to 76% for pedestrians and to 78% for driver assistance systems.

In this way, the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf continues to hold its own under these rigorous tests, where it has always come out on top. At the same time, this serves as a study for the German manufacturer, which will be able to keep developing and implementing new safety measures not only for future updates of the Golf, but also for the other members of the range.
