Following the presentation of the first production version of the e-Golf, an electric compact, Volkswagen has released the first data and images of the new Golf GTD VII ahead of its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

The Volkswagen Golf GTD is presented as the most powerful diesel in the Golf engine range, thanks to a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine capable of delivering 184 CV at 3,500 rpm and 380 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm to the front wheels. The engine is mounted transversely at the front and, as with the other diesels in the VAG Group, uses the Common Rail system.

Two gearbox options will be available, a manual and a dual-clutch automatic. Both have six speeds. With the manual gearbox, the Volkswagen Golf GTD can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 230 km/h. These figures leave the previous generation far behind.

It has a remarkably low average consumption for its power, weight (1,302 kg) and performance. In the average homologation cycle, the seventh generation returns 4.2 litres/100 km.

Compared with the less sporty versions, the Golf GTD features different bumpers, a larger rear spoiler, a chrome exhaust tailpipe and a diffuser. Inside the cabin it has stainless steel pedals, a sports steering wheel and sports seats. It also comes as standard with a firmer suspension that lowers the ride height, and 17-inch alloy wheels fitted with 225/45 R17 tyres.
