The Volkswagen ID.5 will be the coupé version of its sibling, the ID.4

A new coupé SUV will join the electric family of Volkswagen, and its name will be Volkswagen ID.5

The colleagues at Autocar announce that, starting with the Volkswagen ID.4, the body variant coupé will be marketed under the name Volkswagen ID.5.

In connection with the date and place of presentation of the car that will serve as the basis for this new coupé SUV, the British outlet has announced that, according to its sources, the distinction between the standard body and the coupé will entail a clear and differentiated nomenclature between them.

Volkswagen Id 4 China 4In this way, the Volkswagen ID.4, which will be unveiled and shown to the general public next April, between the 10th and the 19th, at the New York International Auto Show or New York Auto Show, will not only make its debut as a priority, but it is also possible that official information and even dates regarding the presentation of the Volkswagen ID.5, or manufacturing and sales timelines, will be revealed there.

According to the published text, this new SUV with a more streamlined body will be presented at a date later than that of the official unveiling of its sibling, which has a body closer to that of classic off-road vehicles.

If its presentation does not take place until late 2020, we may then be looking at a vehicle that could begin assembly as early as 2021, and either reach dealerships by the end of 2021, or else in 2022.

The key to its manufacture: sharing the same modular platform

There will be no structural differences between the two vehicles. This means that both will be built on the MEB, or modular electric vehicle platform, of the Volkswagen Group. This same architecture underpins the production of the precursor of the ID family, the Volkswagen ID.3.

VW ID.3This architecture suggests that these three models will share generic specifications, such as, depending on their powertrain, a power output for the Volkswagen ID.4 and, by extension, the Volkswagen ID.5 of around 200 CV.

As for range, for both the Volkswagen ID.4 and the ID.5, depending on the battery fitted, the reference figures come from the already marketed Volkswagen ID.3, which has a 45 kWh battery; the intermediate option, at 58 kWh, offers up to 420 km of range and, finally, the highest-capacity version, at 77 kWh, can cover up to 550 km on a single charge.
