Hybrid and electric vehicles have become a very important option not only for private individuals, but also for many companies that need to rely on cars in order to carry out their work. In this situation is the German police force, a professional sector that uses vehicles to work and, above all, to protect citizens. Specifically, we find a new member among the German officers, the Volkswagen Passat GTE Variant.

The GTE presents itself as a vehicle very well suited to the duties of a police officer: keeping watch over the streets and taking action when necessary. This is because the hybrid Passat combines reduced consumption perfectly with a sporty tuning, sufficient to chase down anyone attempting to evade the law. At the same time, by using the GTE models of the Volkswagen range, they are contributing to better care of the environment.

Specifically, 21 units of the Passat GTE have been allocated to the police of Lower Saxony, a region in northern Germany. In this way, a trial will be carried out with the Volkswagen hybrid model, with the aim of checking whether it is suitable to meet the needs of the German security forces. At the same time, the GTE’s specifications have not been modified, since it keeps its mechanics intact.

Under the bonnet of the Passat GTE we find a 1.4 TSI four-cylinder engine capable of producing 156 CV of power. This figure could easily move any Passat, but the hybrid variant offers an extra boost of power thanks to the addition of an electric motor. In this case, we find a battery that adds 116 CV of power, resulting in 218 CV, a figure more than sufficient to successfully protect the German streets.

At the same time, we find a total delivery of 400 Nm from 1,600 rpm up to 3,500, made possible by the combination of both motors. The Passat GTE is capable of reaching 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, a very respectable figure for a vehicle of its size. But raw power is not the only good thing the German saloon offers, since it has a range of 50 kilometres in electric mode, which will allow the police to patrol the streets without using a single drop of fuel.

On the other hand, the Passat GTE is a plug-in hybrid, so the police station has fitted specific chargers. During breaks and shift changes, members of the force will be able to have the battery at 100% in just over two hours. Without a doubt, the addition of the GTE has been a real success, since it offers a perfect balance between efficiency and sportiness.
