Turn signals, a safety measure that can save us from having an accident

Turn signals are an essential safety element. They not only indicate your intentions but can also help prevent an accident or confusion behind the wheel.

Several elements can be found on practically every vehicle that look after both our safety and that of others. Some of these features only activate in the event of a collision, such as an airbag; others belong to the vehicle’s technology suite, and a few depend on the driver’s own actions. Within this last group are the turn signals, a light that not only shows where we are heading, but can also prevent an accident.

Today, every vehicle offers a level of safety suitable for road use, whatever its category, and at the same time comes with a range of features that help us drive safely and efficiently. However, not all drivers make use of these measures, and they can cause an accident or force other vehicles into dangerous manoeuvres to avoid a collision.

Turn signals first appeared in 1920 and, although their design was quite different from today’s, their purpose was the same. Early vehicles had arms that extended out when making a manoeuvre, but over time manufacturers introduced bulbs, to make them easier to see. This became the basis of the turn signals we know and use today, yet not all drivers are aware of how important this element is.

Turn signals should be used well in advance of the manoeuvre, so that the driver behind us can anticipate our movements. This way, we prevent other vehicles from having to make sudden turns or brake abruptly. However, the use of light signals is most often neglected at roundabouts. At this kind of junction, vehicles already inside the roundabout tend not to use their indicators, which not only confuses drivers trying to enter, but can also cause an accident when no one knows where a car is heading.

At the same time, failing to use this safety measure can be fatal on the motorway. This happens when the indicator is not used when it is needed, such as when taking an exit. Without doubt, using this feature of the car is more important than we think, since it contributes to more orderly and safer driving.
