This is the spectacular Škoda Mountiaq, a pick-up concept based on the Kodiaq

This is how the Škoda Mountiaq looks, a pick-up prototype designed by Škoda’s apprentice school, which every year surprises us with a new creation

Since 2014, Škoda has been doing excellent work at the brand’s Vocational Training School in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic, with the apprentices who pass through it each year, allowing them to give free rein to their imagination and skills by creating a new prototype based on one of the brand’s models. Over these years they have surprised us with a spectacular concept, and this year they have done it again with a pick-up based on the Kodiaq.

The Škoda Mountiaq, which is the name they have given it, was previewed for us just a few days ago with video and images showing the work carried out and praising the great job done by the apprentices, and now we see it in all its glory. This Škoda Mountiaq project involved 35 apprentices from seven different trades, who have put in more than 2,000 hours of intensive work since autumn 2018, when the project began taking its first steps in the design phase.

To do this, they took a Škoda Kodiaq, reinforced the bodywork and removed the roof, so they could fit the glazed rear panel as well as new windows and, since it is a pick-up, a loading platform that includes a hidden cargo space. This meant modifying and adapting new doors, a new front and rear bumper, new door sills and a completely new rear section. The rear section was logically the most work, since the loading platform also includes a fully functional tailgate.

Once the modifications were complete, the Škoda Mountiaq measures 4,999 mm long, 2,005 mm wide and 1,710 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,788 mm and a total gross weight of 2,450 kilograms. Since the Škoda Mountiaq has been designed to have greater off-road capability, the apprentices used the ground clearance of the Kodiaq Scout as a reference, increasing it by ten centimetres to reach a total of 29 centimetres of ground clearance.

But to improve that off-road capability, the apprentices fitted elements typical of this type of vehicle, such as Rockstar II 17-inch alloy wheels, fitted with special tyres with a deep tread; a integrated winch has also been installed at the front, with a bracket designed for the purpose, capable of withstanding the stress of the toughest situations, along with new more powerful fog lights and protection bars in black. To provide more light, an LED light bar was installed on the roof, and the loading platform, the grille, the logo on the bonnet and the engine compartment feature lighting effects. To finish the exterior, the bodywork has been painted in Sunset Orange.

Inside, besides following the brand’s Simply Clever philosophy with ingenious solutions, the apprentices created a logo for the interior roof lining, as well as an exclusive logo for the model, which has also been embroidered in orange on the backrest of the front seats. It also features some very unusual equipment, such as an integrated fridge and two walkie-talkies, as well as a Columbus infotainment system with 320 V speakers, the same as the Kodiaq’s, but complemented by a 2,000 V amplifier and a 2,000 V subwoofer.
