Long Beach

Long Beach hosted this weekend the sixth ePrix of the Formula E season, in which no driver has managed to repeat a victory. In this race the winner was Nelson Piquet Jr., which added a historic touch to the event, since his father had won in this same place 35 years earlier when the Long Beach race belonged to the Formula 1 World Championship.

The Long Beach event managed to gather more than 23,000 spectators to watch this championship of electric single-seaters, which continues trying to carve out a place among motorsport fans. Before the race, both the free practice sessions and the qualifying session took place, in which Sébastien Buemi achieved the pole, although he would later be penalised, leaving the first position in the hands of Daniel Abt, who started ahead of Nicolas Prost and Nelson Piquet Jr.

Piquet Jr.’s start was good and he quickly moved to the front of the race. From that moment on, the China Racing driver dominated the race, and he was not affected by the numerous incidents on track that forced the safety car out twice, following the accidents of Scott Speed against the wall and of Charles Pic and Jarno Trulli, who collided at a corner.

Abt kept pace with Piquet Jr. while Vergne climbed back up to third place. Nicolas Prost also fought for the top positions, but both he and Abt had to pass through the pit lane after receiving a penalty for excessive use of energy. That cleared the picture at the front, with Piquet Jr. winning by a couple of seconds over Vergne, who in turn finished just over a second ahead of Lucas di Grassi, the championship leader. Jaime Alguersuari, the only Spaniard on the grid, finished 8th with Virgin Racing, recovering from 14th place, where he had qualified.

Following this race, Lucas Di Grassi is at the top of the championship with 75 points, ahead of Piquet Jr.’s 74 and Nicolas Prost’s 69. The 4 points scored by Alguersuari place him 9th with a total of 30.

The next championship event will be on 9 May in Monaco, on a circuit that will share sections with the one designed for Formula 1. This was the final classification in Long Beach:
