SsangYong XAV, a prototype 4x4 in the traditional style

Alongside the Hyundai Enduro and Kia Novo, a third prototype that is also drawing attention these days at the Seoul Motor Show can be seen in the space of SsangYong Motor. The Mahindra-owned manufacturer has unveiled the XAV, a design exercise that fulfils multiple visions, among them the intricate task of combining the company’s past and future in a single vehicle whose production is not confirmed.
SsangYong has created the XAV to begin defining the new identity of its products, a timeless image of SUV that appeals to a young audience while adapting to current trends without forgetting the authentic nature of a 4×4 of the “old school“. Its rugged look of straight lines evokes SsangYong’s first model, the Korando based on the Jeep CJ-7.

Every corner of the XAV’s bodywork exudes the character of an off-road vehicle like those of yesteryear and, as a whole, recalls similar attempts by other brands such as the Toyota FJ Cruiser, which likewise began as a prototype shown at the Detroit Motor Show in 2003.
The large protective cladding, the wide square wheel arches that give it more presence, the look of the bumpers and the multiple compartments for storing items for outdoor activities -one of them replaces the typical spare wheel mounted on the tailgate- underline this nature.

SsangYong does not show images of its cabin, although it states that it is characterised by individual seats with a sporty look, a large, easy-to-use instrument cluster and additional storage compartments in which to distribute luggage.
The XAV is powered by a hybrid powertrain that combines a 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors driving both axles, providing four-wheel drive. It is also equipped with the Smart Motion Control system, which includes electrically actuated air suspension and surround-view monitoring for safer driving over difficult terrain.
