The German brand is reportedly developing a new generation of the Volkswagen Passat that could arrive, exclusively, as an estate.

Volkswagen could be developing a Passat Variant due to arrive in 2024. Specifically, the Volkswagen Passat celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and to mark the occasion the brand is working on a completely new Passat B9 that will reach Europe during September. Furthermore, Thomas Schaefer has hinted that the new model will only be offered as an estate.

The new Passat will be built on the same platform as the Skoda Superb. The next-generation Superb is due to arrive before the end of the year, with a choice of saloon and estate body styles. Well, we say ‘saloon’, but the Skoda will most likely return as a liftback rather than a true saloon with a separate boot.

Spy photographers have captured some images of the new Passat, and we can say it will have a slightly sportier look, characterised by a sloping rear window. It will also feature a grille inspired by the new Golf. Inside, a large square touchscreen with a digital instrument cluster will stand out. What could become the final generation of the Passat will undoubtedly be the last to use a combustion engine; most models are powered by four-cylinder powertrains, including a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid or a 1.5-litre PHEV, the latter delivering up to 282 CV and a range of 100 km.

Volkswagen has converted its former Emden plant in Germany to produce the ID.4 and ID.7, so both the Volkswagen Passat and the Skoda Superb will be assembled in Bratislava, which is also home to the Volkswagen e-Up, the Audi Q7, the Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg.
