C5 X Citroen Sedans Hybrid Cars Technology
The Citroën C5 X receives a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and Level 2 semi-autonomous driving
The Citroën C5 X receives a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, replacing the PureTech engine, which disappears, along with autonomous driving functions

Citroën’s bet with a model like the C5 X has proven successful: this saloon with crossover character has been on the market for only a year and has already managed to sell more than 45,000 units worldwide, ranking second among the best-selling cars in the D segment. The French brand wants to continue and build on this success, so the C5 X now incorporates new technologies and also a new powertrain, which will allow it to attract an even wider range of customers.
Since its arrival on the Spanish market, the brand made it clear that it would drop diesel engines for the C5 X, so if we opted for this model we could only choose the 130 hp PureTech petrol engine with automatic gearbox; while if we preferred the 225 hp plug-in hybrid option we would have to select the top trim level called Shine Pack.

This powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain will remain the only one available for the Shine Pack trim but, on the other hand, the Citroën C5 X gains the Hybrid 180 ë-EAT8 plug-in hybrid powertrain for the rest of the trims, and in this way the 130 hp PureTech petrol engine will disappear from the C5 X range. It is worth noting that this powertrain is already present in the C5 family, specifically in the C5 Aircross since late last year.

The Plug In Hybrid 180 ë-EAT8 hybrid system uses a 1,600 cc PureTech petrol engine delivering 150 hp together with a 81 kW electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 180 hp and 360 Nm of torque, with CO2 emissions of 27 g/km in its lightest version. This hybrid system is characterised by its smoothness and linear acceleration, with torque available immediately, capable of reaching a top speed of 135 km/h.

This hybrid system is paired with a lithium-ion battery with a 12.4 kWh capacity made up of 84 cells, which allows up to 62 kilometres of electric-only range according to the WLTP cycle and, in urban cycle, the range increases to 71 kilometres. Once the battery has been depleted, it can be recharged in approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, provided we use a 7.4 kW charger.

In addition, taking advantage of the introduction of this powertrain, Citroën brings Level 2 semi-autonomous driving to the C5 X with the arrival of Highway Driver Assist 2.0, which introduces the following functions:
- Semi-automatic lane change: this function allows an overtaking manoeuvre and returning to the lane, as long as we are travelling at speeds between 70 and 180 km/h. To do so, the driver must activate the indicator and confirm the manoeuvre, after which the vehicle carries out the manoeuvre automatically.
- Anticipated speed recommendation: the C5 X is able to indicate the appropriate speed to accelerate or slow down based on the long-distance reading of speed signs.
- Grip sensor: the steering wheel now features a grip sensor to detect whether the driver is active.
The Citroën C5 X with the new Plug In Hybrid 180 ë-EAT8 powertrain is already available on the Spanish market, with prices starting from 44,215 euros.
