Volkswagen decides: goodbye to the ID range

It is not that Volkswagen is abandoning the electric range, which is the future of the automotive industry, but rather that the company wants to keep its classic models.

The ID range is Volkswagen’s well-known offer of electric cars. A name that has been built up from several electrified models that want to occupy their place in the increasingly contested battery electric market. But although it features very attractive cars, it has not been as appealing to buyers as expected. So much so that the German company is considering dropping it.

Don’t worry, because this does not mean they will stop manufacturing and selling this type of vehicle. What is going to disappear is the ID name. This move comes very shortly after its launch, so it may come as a surprise. But the company has seen that introducing a new brand, even though it focuses on new-generation electric cars that Volkswagen proposes.

In fact, the new models have a foundation that can recall the iconic models of Volkswagen. Models that, given their track record and history, may have a better run in the market, even though they are shifting towards electrification. This also does not mean that the current models will disappear from the market immediately. The brand’s plans are different.

The idea is that when their commercial life ends they will lose their name and in the new generations they will adopt names that are already part of automotive industry history. For example, the Volkswagen ID.3 has a lot in common with the legendary Volkswagen Golf, so it will possibly revert to this name. This way, a model with many years of history and proven results will continue to exist, and the model will not be duplicated under the same brand.

Another model that may change is the ID.4, which could become the Volkswagen ID.Tiguan, so the name that defines electric mobility may be kept, but without abandoning the model name that has become popular. The latest model presented in the ID family has been the ID.7, which, once it is replaced, will become, if everything goes as Volkswagen expects, the ID.Passat.

This could happen in 2030, once the useful life of these models ends. Thus, the next generations, fully electric, will become the only models of the brand for the new generations of the ID.3 (ID.Golf), the ID.4 (ID.Tiguan) and the ID.7 (ID.Passat).
