Volkswagen announces the arrival of the Golf R Variant with its presentation, a model that brings together the best of the “R” version in an estate body style

Despite the rise of SUVs and their sporty variants, which blend space with superior performance, many drivers still want saloons or estate cars with a sporty character, and manufacturers seem to be listening: for example, BMW has decided to launch a high-performance version of the 3 Series Touring.

Volkswagen is another brand that has moved in this direction, although it was not entirely clear it would make its way to Spain. Finally, the German brand has announced the second generation of the Golf R estate, the Golf R Variant, a model that perfectly combines the sportiness of its TSI engine with greater comfort and interior space.

On the outside of the Volkswagen Golf R Variant, as you can imagine, the differences are found exclusively at the rear, where the roofline is extended to end in a tailgate that includes a rear spoiler with gloss black side mouldings. A little lower down we can see the LED light cluster that extends toward the centre of the tailgate, ending in a rear bumper that integrates the rear diffuser and the two dual exhaust outlets.

Once inside the Volkswagen Golf R Variant, all occupants will benefit from greater comfort, especially in the rear seats, along with a boot offering a capacity of 611 litres, perfect for carrying all the family luggage. This capacity can be increased to 1,642 litres by folding down the seats. In addition, for the first time on this version, a towbar will be available as an option, with a maximum towing capacity of up to 1.9 tonnes and a maximum vertical load on the towball of 80 kg.

Mechanically, you already know the drill: the Volkswagen Golf R Variant also uses the 2.0 TSI engine, delivering 320 CV and a torque of 420 Nm, paired with the seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Power can be sent to all four wheels thanks to the 4MOTION system, with selective torque control on each rear wheel. To this we can add the electronic differential lock (XDS) and the DCC adaptive suspension, for total control over the vehicle.
