Volkswagen has chosen the Los Angeles Auto Show to present its seventh concept built on the MEB platform of the German group. It is called Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept and is a fully electric model that looks more like a sports car than a crossover. The show featured a production version for Europe and North America.

Although the concept car is only equipped with a 278 CV engine mounted at the rear, a second motor could be added to give it all-wheel drive and a total output of 358 CV. Thanks to an 82 kWh battery, the concept has a projected range of up to 590 km on the WLTP cycle.

In terms of appearance, the Space Vizzion concept is a kind of 2/3, 1/3 cross between an estate and a crossover. According to Volkswagen, it combines the “aerodynamic design of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness and versatility of an SUV”.

It measures 4,958 mm long, 1,529 mm high and 1,897 mm wide, with a wheelbase of 2,964 mm. It also has a very low drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd and 22-inch alloy wheels.

At the front, there are thin strips of white light, an illuminated brand logo, IQ Light matrix LED headlights, honeycomb-style LED daytime running lights and, of course, no radiator grille. Walk past the concept and you will notice there are no door handles. Instead, the vehicle features illuminated touch surfaces that light up as soon as its advanced keyless function detects someone approaching with a vehicle key or a synchronised mobile key on a smartphone.

When a person touches the activated surface, the light pulses, the touch panel vibrates and the door opens.

At the rear, there is a roof spoiler, a spoiler lip and a diffuser, while a strip of transparent red light runs across the whole section and through the LED rear light clusters. All the concept’s lighting elements activate when the driver opens the car.

Inside, all driving information is shown mainly on the Augmented Reality (AR) display screen, which replaces the traditional cabin. A smaller secondary screen shows only basic information, while infotainment, comfort, online functions and vehicle settings are grouped on a 15.6-inch touchscreen.

As can be seen, this concept seats four, although the German manufacturer will also consider a five-seat version once the vehicle goes into production. Other features include the touch-sensitive AppleSkin material, a large luggage space behind the rear seats, ambient lighting with 30 colours to choose from, voice control, Smart Climate, a steering wheel with capacitive touch panels, a steering column gear lever, online functions, plus a wide range of light functions with animations showing Hello and Goodbye, Lock and Unlock, charging times, brake warnings, navigation, incoming calls and more.

How does the new Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept perform?

As expected, the new Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion Concept runs on a 278 CV electric motor with 550 Nm of peak torque mounted at the rear, and an 82 kWh lithium-ion battery. The total system output can be increased to 338 CV with all-wheel drive thanks to a 104 CV coaxial unit, allowing it to reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 5 seconds. Meanwhile, the top speed is electronically limited to 175 km/h. Charging to 80% of 82 kWh takes approximately 30 minutes.

The Volkswagen ID. Space Vizzion was presented at the famous Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles. The world premiere coincided with the opening of the permanent exhibition “Building an Electric Future”. Volkswagen is a partner of the museum, and the exhibition shows facets of future vehicles, from design and prototypes to production ideas.
