Volvo continues advancing on its path toward electrification: more range for its hybrids

The brand wants all its models to be electrified, and it has improved battery capacity and electric range to be a benchmark in Europe

Volvo still aims to be a benchmark in electrification across its models, and has just announced new versions of its models using its hybrid engines. Specifically, it wants all its models to have more range in electric mode, and to that end it is working on small modifications that will increase this ability to drive in fully electric mode.

Specifically, the brand’s most powerful engines, the T8 Twin Engine and the T6 Twin Engine, have received modifications and additions to make them more efficient. Both engines work with the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and are available in the brand’s most powerful models.

Hybrid engines with more range

The T8 Twin Engine delivers 480 CV and in the coming months will feature a new battery and a charging system that recovers energy from the battery. The range of these engines has increased by 15% and they are currently found in the 60 and 90 ranges, the brand’s top models.

The T6 Twin Engine will also begin using this new battery and the energy recovery system through braking. It is currently found in the Volvo S60 estate and the Volvo S60 saloon. But the brand wants to go a step further and begin modifying the less powerful engines used on Volvo’s compact platform, known as the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

The T5 Twin Engine engines and later the T4 Twin Engine, which power the Volvo XC40, will also have a hybrid version that will set them apart from previous variants. But these Volvo models will not only have changes to the engines and their hybrid systems, they will also have modifications to their exterior and interior styling.

Various driver assistance systems, designed to improve the driving experience in 90 range cars, have been added to 60 range models, while the top range now includes Android Auto connectivity. Looking ahead, Volvo says it will have a plug-in hybrid version in each of the models it launches. It will also launch Mild Hybrid versions, starting with the diesel and petrol versions of the XC90 and XC60.
