Volvo renews its hybrid drive

Volvo will include a newly developed electrified powertrain in its future models. The Swedish brand will also present a range of mild hybrids.

Volvo is renewing itself in electric and sustainable mobility. Following its strategy and with fairly high demand, it has improved its production capacity to cover up to 25% of its output in dual-motor plug-in hybrids.

With this, the manufacturer expects its new powertrains to become the new standard and thus achieve its goal of having all its vehicles electrified within the next decade.

Volvo: updated hybrid engines

Starting with the update of its T6 and T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid engines, Volvo confirms that plug-in options will be available across all its future models.

The T8 Twin Engine hybrid brings, in addition to its 425 CV, a more advanced battery and the new Brake By Wire or brake-by-wire technology. The new powertrain will be available for the 90 and 60 series models.

Likewise, the T6 Twin Engine hybrid, with a smaller displacement, is combined with both the new battery and the braking technology. This will be available on the V60 estate and the S60.

Among these updates, the Brake By Wire system stands out. It is a braking technology that interacts with the energy recovery system, thereby reducing consumption and emissions during deceleration.

Renewal of the new models Volvo

Volvo will renew its entire car range with mild-hybrid or plug-in hybrid systems. However, all its diesel or petrol engines will include a degree of electrification, bringing the ECO label as standard.

Nevertheless, the T8 hybrid engine will remain the top of the range, but complemented by the new “B” designation, previously “D” and “T”, for diesel and petrol. These internal combustion engines will incorporate the mild hybrid system.

The first to feel the consequences has been the Volvo XC90, which will be available under the B5 badge in diesel and petrol, while the B6 will be petrol only.

In the same way, and following the plan to extend these new engines, the Volvo XC60 is the next victim. The so-called B4 will be a diesel engine, the B5 diesel and petrol, while the B6 for petrol.
