Wörthersee: Volkswagen will show the Golf GTI+

2007 Volkswagen Golf GTI W12 design study

As if the spectacular GTI W12 that Volkswagen presented at the Wörthersee in 2007 were not enough, the German show — practically a testing ground for the VAG Group — will once again offer this year a new tuning project for the Golf VII GTI, which they say will be “more realistic” than that 12-cylinder, 641 hp version, with the engine of the Bentley Continental, which could reach 320 km/h.

According to Ulrich Hackenberg, the Wörthersee GTI will not only be a concept shown to the delight of Volkswagen fans, but will also be the first step towards a GTI that could go into production. It is said it could offer up to 250 hp, with front-wheel drive, distributed through the new mechanical limited-slip differential already offered on the seventh generation of the current GTI.

The GTI+, the name it seems it will carry, will be another way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first GTI, from 1975. Furthermore, it still will not reach the Golf R, which is said to have more than 300 hp. It will be complemented by the Golf anniversary editions, such as the Mk V 30 Edition and the Mk VI 35 Edition.

It is not yet known exactly what else this Golf+ will offer, but there is talk of a carbon-fibre roof that would help reduce the car’s total weight, an option that could appear in future GTI editions. It is estimated that the roof could save around 9 kilos. Additionally, Volkswagen also has other measures in the pipeline to save weight on the GTI, which would also be applied to the Audi TT Ultra Quattro, the Audi that will also be presented at the Wörthersee.
