Alfa Romeo Myth: the return of a car that aims to save the brand

Although the downward trend is worrying in the brand’s sales figures, the company has plans to revive Alfa Romeo with new models for 2023

Alfa Romeo finds itself at a delicate moment regarding its future. Registrations of the brand’s vehicles continue to fall in all markets, and managers want to revive the image of Alfa Romeo. To do so, Stellantis wants to establish a premium brand base, into which Lancia, DS and Alfa Romeo will be incorporated. With this, they want the brand to once again become a rising value in the European market.

To this end, they are working on the launch of several models aimed at that goal. One of them is the Tonale SUV, which is scheduled to hit the market in 2022. Another card the Italian brand will play is a complete redesign of one of its best-known models, the Giuletta. But they also want to try a model that comes from its past and to which they will give a new opportunity: the Alfa Romeo Mito.

New and old models to revive the brand

The downward trend at Alfa Romeo is reflected in the data recorded in Spain. From January to September, only 1,375 units of the brand have been registered in our country. In September alone, just 152 units went through the administration, making it one of the brands with the fewest sales in our market.

With the incorporation of the Tonale, the aim is to reverse this trend and also to include the Alfa Romeo Mito in the recovery drive. This model was already in the brand’s catalogue, although it was not the success they expected. In 2023 this new version of the Alfa Romeo Mito will arrive, based on Stellantis’ CMP platform. This platform is also used in the Peugeot 208 and the Opel Corsa, so it has already been thoroughly tested and its functionality proven.

Alfa Romeo wants to phase out all combustion engines by 2027, so the design and development of this new model will take this into account. It would be no surprise to find a fully electric version of the model, as happens with the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e. Beyond that, there is no further information about what this revived model may offer.

To stay in the market, Alfa Romeo has to demonstrate a profitability that allows it to remain active. To that end, they are preparing these two projects and a few more that we will have the chance to see in the coming months.
