Audi R20, a future Le Mans car you can register for the road

Audi confirms for 2016 a supercar based on its competition cars, capable of dethroning the best supercars of the moment. It will arrive in very limited numbers in 2016.

Over the years, many brands have been forced to produce, in very limited numbers, true supercars designed for the track rather than the road. Competitions such as endurance championships or rally demand cars based on others that are already on sale.

The director of Quattro GmbH, Franciscus Van Meel, has confirmed a vehicle capable of dethroning the McLaren P1, whose performance we do not yet know, and it would even outperform its cousin, the Porsche 918 Spyder. The aforementioned car would be based on one of the cars the brand has used at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where in recent years it has triumphed like no other.

The R20, the name under which it is expected to enter production in 2016 in a series of no more than 250 units, would feature, according to Automobile Magazine, gull-wing doors, active aerodynamics, a dorsal fin, and an adjustable rear spoiler capable of changing its position depending on driving conditions, and vertical LED headlights.

Inside, we could only expect a competition atmosphere. Bucket-type seats with four-point harnesses and a screen in the instrument cluster where the driver or pilot can see all the necessary information. A car built for racing, with no frills to distract from driving or add weight to the whole. That is how a supercar should be, and not what we have at the moment.

The biggest news would come in the mechanical section. Keeping up the tradition of Audi, the R20 would have a V6 diesel engine capable of delivering more than 500 CV to the rear wheels. On the front axle we would find two electric motors, one per wheel, which would help both to improve traction and to increase the vehicle’s performance and reduce consumption. In this way we would be talking about a total of 700 CV, a more than reasonable figure for a vehicle that would not exceed 1,000 kg in weight.

It could be presented in 2015 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
