Audi will step up its SUV offensive with a new Q5 Sportback

Audi continues expanding its SUV range with the Q5, a model that will soon offer a Sportback variant.

SUVs are booming, and carmakers, well aware of this, have decided to exploit the segment in order to satisfy market demand. Without a doubt, Audi is one of the brands that bets most heavily on this sector of the automotive world, as its model range demonstrates, and that range may be about to welcome a new member. After offering a long string of SUVs, both electric and combustion-engined, Audi went on to develop Sportback bodystyles, as we saw with the Q3 and the e-tron.

Given the success of this variant, which began with the Q8, the house of the four rings may have decided to exploit it a little further. While the Q7 could be considered the standard version of the Q8, the Q3 and e-tron have their own Sportback versions. So what about the Q5?

Let’s recall that the second generation of one of Audi’s most successful SUVs has already undergone a facelift and has adopted a range of different hybrid and mild-hybrid powertrain options. However, the successful formula of the Q5 was still missing something, and that “something” could be a new Sportback bodystyle with which the German brand would take on the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé more directly.

Through this new ingredient, the German company will not only expand its SUV offering but also give the Q5 a sportier and spicier character. This will be made possible by substantial differences that will mainly affect the styling, where the C-pillar will be lengthened and tilted in order to give the four-ring SUV that coupé touch.

Mechanically, we should not expect any novelties, since both versions will share engines just as the other models in the range that also use this bodystyle do. However, a few millimetres will be lost in the rear seats and the boot will be slightly reduced, although in exchange we will gain a more attractive design and better dynamic behaviour.

For now, the arrival date of this Audi Q5 Sportback is unknown, but everything points to its presentation taking place before the end of 2020. However, the health crisis caused by COVID-19 could delay both its debut and that of other novelties from the German brand.
