BMW confirms that the Neue Klasse will debut with the iX3
The iX3 will be the first model of BMW’s Neue Klasse to reach the market in 2026, and its presentation will take place next September in Munich.
BMW has everything ready for the debut of the first model of its long-awaited Neue Klasse, an electric SUV that will sit within the brand’s 3 Series range and be named iX3. The official presentation of the production version of this model is expected to take place in September 2025, during the IAA Mobility event held in the German city of Munich.
The Bavarian manufacturer confirmed during the presentation of the company’s annual report for 2024 that the name of the first model of BMW’s Neue Klasse will be iX3. The company is convinced that the debut of this electric SUV will mark the start of an ambitious offensive that will bring a broad range of models to market over the coming years.

Production of the iX3 began in November 2024 at the company’s new Hungarian plant in Debrecen. For now, the Bavarian firm’s secrecy is absolute, and there are hardly any leaked images of the units coming off the assembly line. This seems quite logical, as it would partly spoil the impact BMW hopes to achieve with the model’s presentation in Munich next September.
A new electric saloon is also on its way
The iX3 will not, however, come alone. The Bavarian firm has already revealed that it is working on the development of a second model in the Neue Klasse, an electric sports saloon, which will reach the market shortly afterwards. Unlike the iX3, this model will be built at BMW’s plant in Munich, where all the preparations to make this possible are already under way.
After ending production of BMW’s i3 city EV in July 2022, it now seems quite likely that this new saloon in the Neue Klasse will reuse the same name, given that this model will sit within the manufacturer’s range as part of the 3 Series. BMW already showed a prototype of this electric saloon in spring 2024.

Finally, with regard to the technical side, we should recall that BMW’s Neue Klasse will bring important innovations. The new generation of the Bavarian firm’s electric cars will do away with the prismatic cells the brand’s EVs have used until now, being replaced by cylindrical cells with higher energy density. These vehicles will also feature a new 800V architecture, which will allow them to improve efficiency, reduce wiring and increase the charging power they can accept. This is essential for the future in order to compete in the electric car market.
In addition, BMW already has available a new, sixth generation of its electric drive systems, which it will implement precisely in the new models of the Neue Klasse.
