BMW patents curious 'falcon wings' for its future SUVs
The future SUVs from BMW could feature the new ‘falcon wings’ patent. Would you like to know how they work?

BMW has patented curious ‘falcon wings’ for its future SUVs, and some say they would be ideal for its new BMW X8 M, BMW iX M and could even be seen on the BMW X7. What do you think of the idea? Many manufacturers file patents to keep competitors from ‘stealing’ their ideas, but this one from BMW seems likely to reach production cars very soon.
The patent for the “falcon wings” from BMW shows a new way of opening the doors, but they are not as extreme as those seen on the rear seats of the Tesla Model X. A specialist source in the field has discovered this new patent, and it could begin to revolutionise the SUV market.

This is how the future “falcon wings” from BMW could look
As can be seen in the images published in the patent BMW has just filed, the Bavarian brand has illustrated a large SUV, possibly with capacity for seven passengers, in which the doors to the rear seats appear to lift part of the roof as the side door opens. Are we looking at a change in the automotive industry?
The German manufacturer has noted in the patent that this possible development aims to make it easier to get in and out of the rear seats. Likewise, passengers will be able to enter the third row of seats more comfortably, as more headroom will be created. It is very possible that this patent will be integrated into models developed on the platform called Neue Klasse of the German brand. It is important to highlight that this platform is oriented towards the electrification of the range. Although, as the illustrations show, a space will be created that could be used as energy storage.

As we have mentioned, this extra opening of the cabin will allow better access to the rear seats, even if they are facing backwards. It is not a far-fetched idea, as BMW could be working on a luxury SUV that could compete directly with the Mercedes-Maybach GLS.
Although the patent that BMW has just filed will bring many benefits, it is true that it will noticeably increase the weight of the assembly, since it consists of a fairly complex mechanism that will allow the doors to open electrically, hydraulically and even mechanically.
