Confirmed! The Polestar Precept will enter production

The Polestar Precept will enter production. This fully electric saloon will be 150 mm longer than the Tesla Model S to accommodate a larger battery.

The Polestar Precept has become the newest member of the Polestar family to enter production. This elegant saloon will become the brand’s flagship and will be in production in 2022. Thomas Ingenlath, head of the brand, has stated that the positive reaction from potential customers has notably influenced the decision to take the model into production.

This fully electric saloon was presented earlier this year as a technological showcase from the Volvo subsidiary, both in terms of design and the use of sustainable materials. It is worth mentioning that these new composites are made from flax, which reduces weight by up to 50%. In addition to flax, the new Polestar Precept also uses recycled PET bottles, recovered fishing nets and vinyl derived from recycled cork.

Although the concept was initially intended to showcase the features of the future Polestar 3 SUV and of the saloon that would have competed with the Tesla Model S, the Polestar Precept has found its place and will enter production just as we know it. Ingenlath added that “once we made the Polestar Precept we stepped back and looked at it… My God. Sometimes you simply make something and you are really tempted.” “After we revealed the Precept, we read the articles and became convinced that the design was something people liked and that it could be a real success.” “This is not false: it was built as a show car, but our engineers investigated and found ways to build it and make it. It is an ambitious project, but we wanted to make it our next big project.”

Polestar Precept, what else do we know about it?

The Polestar Precept could enter production by 2022. This process will take longer than usual due to the development work required to ensure that the new materials it uses and its design features can be produced in volume. It will continue to be called the Polestar Precept, although it will also include a number-based nomenclature. It will offer very competitive range and performance that places it on the level of premium sports cars.

It is important to highlight that the Polestar Precept will have a length of 3.1 metres, which will allow a large battery to be installed and create sufficient space in the cabin. Inside, the concept heading to production will feature the next-generation version of Polestar’s Android-based infotainment system, with a 15-inch portrait-oriented central touchscreen and a 12.5-inch digital instrument cluster.

While the Polestar 1 was a limited-run plug-in hybrid coupé, the recently launched Polestar 2 is a higher-volume electric fastback designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3. Next year will be followed by the Polestar 3, an elegant SUV that tends to take its design cues from the Precept. Although the Precept will not be a limited-run model in the same way as the Polestar 1, Ingenlath added that “mass production at 30 or 60 cars per hour is not the idea either. There are models and volumes in between. You can’t produce just hundreds of these cars, but you don’t need to produce 10,000 for them to be relevant to production.”

Ingenlath compared Polestar’s approach with that of firms such as Porsche, suggesting there was room for both mass-production models and lower-volume sports cars. “A company like Porsche also has cars it produces in large numbers and cars it produces in good numbers, but not comparable to an SUV.” “Our SUV is a better volume opportunity than a very low-volume sports car like the Precept.”
