The team at Volkswagen is already working on the next event for fans of the brand, the Wörthersee, which this year reaches its 35th edition.

At this very special event, the latest evolution of the Golf GTI will be officially unveiled, specifically the GTI Clubsport S, the most powerful GTI variant in history.

Currently, the entry-level Golf GTI has 220 CV, drawn from a 2.0 TSI engine. Above this GTI sits the GTI Performance version, which adds 10 extra CV (230 CV in total) and improves, among other elements, the braking system. It adds larger wheels and a mechanical limited-slip front differential.

Although a GTI Performance is already more than fast by today’s standards, it seems that it is not enough for what is expected in its segment, where the average power of performance versions already hovers around 250 CV. That is why, a few months ago, VW presented the GTI Clubsport, which, with no less than 265 CV -280 CV at certain moments- became the most powerful Golf GTI in the history of the model.

Just when it seemed the power escalation would not go any further, Volkswagen surprises us by announcing the arrival of a new version, called the GTI Clubsport S, which we will get to know in a few days during the brand’s fan event held in the city of Wörthersee. This variant will thus become the most extreme and sporty of the range.

With 310 CV, it outpowers the all-wheel-drive Golf R

It seems the GTI Clubsport S will offer, at least, 310 CV, which will place it above the all-powerful Golf R, until now the top of the Golf range. It will continue to feature front-wheel drive, so it will also outperform its close relative, the SEAT Leon Cupra, which in its latest evolution offers 290 CV also to the front wheels.

It is unknown whether, besides the powertrain, this very special variant will include any cosmetic addition that sets it apart from the rest of the GTI Clubsport range. What we are certain of is that, besides the engine, this GTI Clubsport S will mount more aggressive tuning, with even stiffer suspension, a braking system to match, and a less restrictive exhaust system so the engine can “breathe” better.

Will this GTI be able to beat the 7’54” lap time set by the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R at the Nürburgring circuit? From Volkswagen they report that this special version has been tuned in the green hell, so it seems the battle is on now that speed limits on the circuit have been lifted once again.
