Electric vehicle market share in Norway keeps climbing, setting a new record in April

The figures recorded show that the transition to electric mobility in Norway is a consolidated reality that extends across the entire territory.

In April, Norway once again broke its own record, reaching an electric vehicle market share of 98.6 percent of total sales. As surprising as it may seem, of the 11,103 vehicles registered in the country that month, 10,952 were fully electric.

This percentage surpasses the figures of previous months, setting a new record, after electric vehicles accounted for 98 percent of total sales in February and 98.4 percent in March. It is also worth noting that, according to the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), electric vehicles exceeded 95 percent market share in every county in the country. The case of Østfold stands out in particular, at 99.3 percent, while on the other side of the scale, Finnmark, in the north of the country, recorded 95.1 percent.

Another important data point is that although total registrations fell by 1.6 percent compared with April of the previous year, sales of electric vehicles grew by 1.7 percent. The number of registrations of vehicles with any propulsion system other than electric is now practically marginal in the country, with just 87 diesel vehicles registered last April, 31 petrol combustion engine vehicles, 20 plug-in hybrids and a few more conventional hybrids.

“For the first time we are seeing two consecutive records in electric vehicle market share in Norway. With more than 95 percent in every region of the country, there is no longer any doubt: the vast majority of Norwegians now choose an electric vehicle when buying a new car. The key factors behind this situation are price, technology and availability. This is excellent news for the country’s road safety.”

Volkswagen leads April and Tesla leads the year-to-date tally

As for the electric models most in demand among Norwegian drivers, registrations last April were more spread out than in previous months. The undisputed leader was the Volkswagen ID.4 with 781 units, followed by the Toyota Urban Cruiser with 583 units, while the Volkswagen ID.3 completed the podium in third place with 543. The BMW iX3 was, on the other hand, the premium model preferred by Norwegians. The TOP 10 also includes the Toyota bZ4X, Honda C-HR+, Škoda Elroq, VW ID.7, Tesla Model Y and the Ford Explorer. Five of these ten models use the Volkswagen MEB platform, and three are from Toyota.

Finally, it should be noted that so far in 2026, Tesla continues to dominate the Norwegian market with 5,652 Model Y units and 2,062 Model 3 units. The American manufacturer usually reaches its highest sales figures at the end of each quarter, so we can expect registrations of the brand’s vehicles in Norway to rise considerably in May and June.

Behind Tesla, in the year-to-date tally we find the Toyota bZ4X with 1,974 units, followed by the Volkswagen ID.4, the Toyota Urban Cruiser and the Volvo EX40.
