Ferrari 488 Pista Spider: a new way to enjoy performance driving

Ferrari has just announced at Pebble Beach the arrival of the new 488 Pista Spider, the brand’s most radical model with a retractable hardtop, producing 720 CV and 770 Nm.

The supercar segment has evolved in many ways over time, yet it has remained faithful to its core principles. Ever since the first supercars hit the tarmac, they were offered with two different bodystyles: coupé—or fastback—and convertible. This distinction has been upheld for years, something Ferrari demonstrates with the arrival of the most radical V8-engined spider ever built, the 488 Pista Spider. In this way, the Prancing Horse brand carries on the legacy left by generation after generation of the most performance-focused versions of the 488 GTB’s predecessors.

Ferrari has made sure to offer its customers the same level of performance in the Spider version of the 488 Pista. To achieve this, they have retained all the aerodynamic and mechanical innovations, meaning the open-top Prancing Horse remains just as radical. At the same time, the exterior design has also been preserved, as the only notable difference is the ability to retract the roof.

The first thing that catches our attention on the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is its front end, which has been accentuated by the presence of the S-Duct. This component has been taken directly from Formula 1 and gives the 488 Pista Spider far more pronounced aerodynamics, well suited to high speeds on the circuit. Furthermore, new 20″ diamond-design wheels sit on the Pista Spider, and these are accompanied by carbon-fibre-finished wheels that are 20% lighter.

The rear also remains true to the design found on the coupé version, but on this occasion the glass display that allows a glimpse of the Pista’s V8 heart has been dispensed with. In its place is a flat surface covered by the extension of the stripes that run along the entire body of the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, thus creating another distinctive feature of this more radical version.

The turbocharged V8 found in the 488 GTB is still responsible for bringing the Pista to life, but with certain adjustments that allow it to deliver a higher power band. The Spider version is no exception, and so the 4.0-litre V8 that resides within provides its driver with 720 CV of power and 770 Nm of torque. These figures catapult the Italian supercar to 100 km/h in just 2.85 seconds and give it a claimed top speed of 340 km/h.

For now, we don’t know the starting price of the new Ferrari 488 Pista Spider nor whether it will be a limited edition as its predecessor was, the 458 Speciale Aperta. Even so, the Italian brand has managed to keep the Pista Spider’s performance so close that it is practically as quick as the coupé version despite a claimed weight of 1,380 kg, which is 100 kg more than the closed-roof model.
