Ford begins production of the Figo in India

The Indian car market (and any market for goods in general) is a sweet spot for the big companies. Now it’s Ford’s turn to try to win market share in the Asian giant: the launch of the small Ford Figo, derived from the European Ford Fiesta at very low cost, is the company’s spearhead.

Today production has started at the Chennai plant, with a forecast of 200,000 units per year in an attempt to win market share in the compact car segment against Hyundai and Maruti, whose i20 and Swift already dominate much of the sales. Although for the time being it will stay in India, rumour has it that this could become the low-cost model of Ford exportable to the rest of the world.

The Ford Figo is derived from the previous Ford Fiesta. Externally it receives a light facelift, especially at the front, where the new, larger and more elongated headlight units predominate, and it features new wheel designs along with a revised bonnet and bumper.

The Figo will be offered with two engines: a 1.2-litre petrol engine developed exclusively for this model, and in its diesel version the 1.4 TDCi with 68 CV, already known from other Ford, Mazda and PSA models. With no automatic gearbox for the time being, the standard equipment includes ABS, dual airbags, electric pack, air conditioning, alloy wheels and audio system, etc.
