Low light increases accidents

New DGT studies on this matter indicate that low-light conditions, that is, dusk and night, increase the likelihood of an accident. In fact, 32% of accidents occur during this time, when the number of cars on the road is far lower than during daylight hours.

One of the criticisms of the Spanish car fleet is its advanced age. This implies many things: cars consume more, have fewer safety features, both active and passive, and here’s another one: at best they lack xenon lights or powerful headlights to cope with the night. A car from 1990 does not light the road the same way as one from 2005.

According to the DGT itself, 42 percent of fatal road and urban accidents occur in low-light conditions, almost half of all fatalities. However, we don’t see the DGT acknowledging its share of the blame given the poor lighting on many roads, not only secondary ones but main roads too: On Tenerife itself, the motorway linking the north and south of the island has many kilometres with no lighting.

Regarding environmental conditions, they point out that 20% of accidents occur in adverse weather such as snow, hail, rain, etc. From HighMotor we recommend that all drivers check their lighting system, improve it where possible, and take extra precautions when driving at night.
