Ford Mustang 2014: retro but not too much, and with Ecoboost engines

The Ford Mustang promises a complete overhaul to adopt the image of a global car, with new Ecoboost engines and a retro design, but one that is far more elaborate.

While Ford takes care to keep out of the view of prying eyes and ears any clue about the next generation of the Ford Mustang, some details have come to light. Given that we have only two years to go before the new model, it is time to take a closer look at what we know so far.

The latest rumors suggest that the new Mustang will keep the retro look of the current model, though a bit more elaborate, perhaps completely redesigned. Let’s not forget that the Mustang will become a global car and will eventually be adopted by new markets (perhaps Spain), so if its design becomes increasingly Americanized, it may not go down too well with new customers. It is not certain that it will take influences from the Ford Evos, as was said before, but it will definitely look more European than it does now.

We already know that there will continue to be V8 variants, but without a doubt an important point to consider is the very possible appearance of Ecoboost engines, making their presence felt under the hood of the noble pony. Four-cylinder engines have been mentioned (bringing back memories of those Mustang 2.3 SVOs), but the most likely scenario is that a new V6 will be unveiled along with the Mustang; in fact, Ford already has some experimental six-cylinder Ecoboost engines ready for the test models.

Another hot topic for the Mustang, the rear suspension, will get a review from Ford, perhaps adopting the much-requested independent suspension on the rear axle, like the one the Camaro already has.

The future Mustang will surely continue to spark controversy among purists who prefer its somewhat less refined style with spartan interiors (and of poor quality, it must be said), but it is one of the most mechanically customizable coupés, and it will satisfy those who were already clamoring for improvements so the Mustang can reach other markets and exert some influence over European or even Japanese coupés. Two years still remain before we know the final result.
