Honda Prelude Concept: the legendary Japanese coupé returns, and it will feature a hybrid engine

Honda is celebrating 25 years of hybrid propulsion technology by presenting the new Prelude Concept, which previews the return of the Japanese sports coupé to the European market.

The Honda Prelude is back. And it returns almost 25 years after the fifth generation of this Japanese sports car was discontinued in 2001, mainly due to weak sales that did not match the car’s quality: a fantastic chassis with four-wheel steering and an active torque transfer system, and the renowned VTEC engine with 2.2 litres in 185 and 200 CV versions… But suddenly, coupés fell out of fashion, and many brands that offered alternatives in this segment quietly withdrew from it.

Now, Honda will present its new Prelude Concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, from 11 to 14 July, a near-100% preview of the model that will soon become part of Honda’s range for the European market. The underlying reason is the celebration of 25 years since Honda entered the hybrid vehicle market. It is worth recalling that the first hybrid model mass-produced in Europe was the Insight coupé, launched in 1999. It was followed by the Insight, the Civic IMA in 2003, the CR-Z in 2010, the Jazz Hybrid in 2011, the NSX Hybrid in 2016…

Honda currently offers an electrified range in which its Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V and CR-V models are equipped with the brand’s e:HEV hybrid system, which performs very well in terms of performance and efficiency. This propulsion system will also be fitted to the new Prelude.

For now there is no further information on the technical specifications, but there is a set of images that clearly shows the attractive silhouette of the new Prelude, for which Honda promises to keep the sporty DNA and the driving emotion that have always characterised the Japanese coupé across its five previous generations.
