Hybrid SUVs: environmental awareness?

I admit I am very sceptical of hybrid technology when it comes to real fuel savings. Until now, few hybrids have convinced me on economy, and only in urban environments, but the other day, while flicking through a magazine, I came across a comparison of the latest high-performance SUVs on the market with hybrid engines.
I no longer see much sense in launching a 4×4 that puts out around 300 CV and uses a hybrid system combined with a combustion engine, basically because, however environmentally conscious you are, it is obvious that in consumption and emissions a good diesel engine (with today’s technology) can match it.
As I read on through the comparison, I was surprised by the average consumption on the motorway, because, taking the most cautious view (according to the writer) it hovered around 12 l/100 km, and with these figures I believe an SUV with a good diesel engine can improve on them without any problem. Even in the city, consumption remained high, a place where a hybrid engine is supposed to be more economical, but of course we have to factor in other elements such as the weight or power of the vehicle.
So my question is: is an BMW X6 Hybrid really worth it, or a Porsche Cayenne Hybrid (among others)? Honestly, judging only by the consumption data that emerged from this comparison, I think a good diesel engine is better for economy. But as with everything, it seems that if a brand doesn’t immediately launch its hybrid technology, it has already lost the race. Still, I undoubtedly find a hybrid Golf more useful than a Touareg.
In short, I think it is good to develop hybrid technologies, but they should not sell us such a low consumption , because however much costly technology is fitted, the weight and other factors (such as engine power) leave little room for miracles in consumption.
