In the car world, a war is being fought in which the participants are hot hatches. It is common to find one of these vehicles in every brand, since they are a segment that offers a very good balance between performance and versatility. Hyundai has wanted to join this war and has done so with great enthusiasm. The South Korean brand wants to make its German rivals sit up and take notice.

The new Hyundai i30 is the South Korean firm’s compact, and the arrival of a more powerful version in our market was imminent. The Hyundai i30 N arrived a few months ago, seeking to carve out a place among European GTIs. The South Korean brand has placed a big bet on its new compact, and the first impressions are very good.

Aesthetically, we find a design that differs greatly from what we see on a standard i30. At the front there is a more aggressive grille and an integrated “N” in the overall design, which reminds us that this is not an ordinary i30. The front diffuser has been fitted with a red line, which helps better reflect the sporting essence of the i30 N.

At the rear, we find a double exhaust outlet, designed to reproduce the harmonious sound of the 2.0-litre engine located at the front. This petrol engine delivers 250 CV, but Hyundai has also considered customers looking for more aggressive performance and lets them choose between the “basic” version and a Performance version. The top trim of the i30 N has the same turbocharged engine, but in this case it produces 270 CV of pure power and 353 Nm of torque. These figures command respect and place the i30 N head to head with the 308 GTi, León Cupra and Golf GTi Performance.

The engine of the new sporty compact allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h. It is not just any compact, and not only because of its performance, but also because of its price. Hyundai has created a product to rival the biggest names, and the tuning of the i30 N has to be paid for.

The price of the less radical version starts at 33,900 euros, and if you add the Performance Pack the figure rises to 37,900 euros. These prices fall squarely within the sporty compact segment and sit very close to the Golf GTi Performance, which starts at 38,255 euros with the DSG gearbox, and the León Cupra, priced at 34,050 euros.
