Lamborghini Huracán STO: ready for takeoff?

Derived from the competition Huracán, the new road-going Lamborghini Huracán STO receives modifications to improve track driving

Crafted By Lean

In Lamborghini they have applied technological solutions from the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO and the Huracán GT3 EVO competition cars to the road-going Huracán EVO, creating the new Lamborghini Huracán STO, a true supercar homologated for road use and prepared for circuits. Its name says it all: STO, for Super Trofeo Omologata.

Optimized aerodynamics

One of the most important improvements comes with the optimized aerodynamics, which also brings a significant change to the car’s look. The front now features a new element that integrates the bumper and the bonnet into a single piece. The goal is not only to provide greater lightness, but also greater rigidity and a greater airflow through the centrally positioned radiator, to improve engine cooling. According to Lamborghini, this solution, together with other aerodynamic measures, also improves downforce.

As an important part of the new front design, the aerodynamics also include new air intakes designed to direct the airflow around the wheels, reducing drag. The new front splitter directs the air efficiently towards the underbody and the rear diffuser.

At the rear, a new bumper is fitted, a NACA air intake, a manually adjustable rear spoiler with three positions, and a “shark fin” integrated into the bonnet. Among all these changes, the Italian brand announces a nearly 40% improvement in airflow efficiency, and a 53% increase in downforce compared with the Lamborghini Huracán Performante.

Lighter, four-wheel steering and carbon brakes

At the levels where the Huracán Performante already operates, cutting even a single kilogram is a real challenge for engineers… and they have managed to reduce the final weight by no less than 43 kg.

To do so, more than 75% of the exterior body panels are made of carbon fibre using aerospace technology, which saves 25% of material compared with conventional techniques. Other weight-saving measures include a new windscreen 20% lighter, or the impressive magnesium wheels with a central lock. The total kerb weight of the Huracán STO stands at 1,339 kg.

Among the chassis measures, the variable damping receives new settings, and new anti-roll bars and bushings are fitted to provide greater suspension rigidity. The rear-wheel steering of the Huracán EVO is retained, and the Bridgestone tyres specific to this car can be chosen in two versions, depending on whether it will be driven more on the road or on the track. The new CCM-R brakes, developed by Brembo, announce braking power improved by 25%, with fatigue resistance no less than 60% higher compared with the CCB brakes.

640 CV naturally aspirated V10 engine

Where there are no changes is in the engine: the same naturally aspirated V10 as the Huracán EVO, which has only been adjusted to alter the way it delivers its 640 CV, reaching a peak of 8,000 rpm. Maximum torque is 565 Nm at 6,500 rpm.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed LDF dual-clutch gearbox. The ANIMA dynamic driving system includes new modes: STO, for the road; Trofeo, for setting the best lap times on dry tarmac at the circuit; and Pioggia, which optimizes all systems to deliver the best performance on wet tarmac.

The Huracán STO homologates a top speed of 310 km/h, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds. Getting from 0 to 200 km/h takes just 9 seconds, and braking from 100 km/h to a complete stop takes barely 30 metres.

Interior of the Huracán STO

Inside the Huracán STO, the atmosphere is unmistakably racing, with carbon fibre as the star. Even the floor mats are made of this material. The roll cage and four-point safety harnesses make it clear that this is a car designed with circuits in mind. The touchscreen that serves as the control system features new graphics, as well as a comprehensive telemetry system.
