Lexus and Toyota surpass the milestone of 125,000 hybrids sold in Spain

Toyota and its Premium brand, Lexus, have managed to break the 125,000-vehicle barrier for hybrids, with 25,000 units sold over the last seven months

In 2000, the Toyota Prius was launched in Spain, the first model from the brand to use hybrid technology as its means of propulsion. A lot of time has passed since then and the technology has changed considerably since those early days, but the brand remains the most prominent in the Spanish market within the hybrid range.

So much so that Toyota and Lexus have surpassed 125,000 units sold over the last 17 years, which shows there is a market for this type of vehicle. But things become even more interesting when we consider that the latest 25,000 hybrid vehicles from both brands have been sold over the last 7 months. In November 2016, 100,000 hybrid units sold were reached, and from that date until today the remainder have been sold.

Both brands have been chosen by drivers who preferred the hybrid system. Toyota hybrid cars total 98,000 units, while those manufactured under the premium brand, Lexus, reach 27,000 vehicles. Worldwide, the two brands have sold 10.5 million hybrid vehicles since 1997, the year the first generation of the Prius was launched in Japan.

In Spain, the best-selling Toyota hybrid car is the Auris Hybrid, with 37,000 units sold. This figure includes both the five-door version and the estate, the Auris Hybrid Touring Sport. The model that kicked off the hybrid era for Toyota, the Prius, reaches 25,000 units, and finally, the Yaris Hybrid reaches 18,000 units sold in our country.

The arrival of the brand’s two most recent hybrids, the RAV4 hybrid and the C-HR, together add up to 14,000 units. The first has already recorded sales of 8,000 units and the second 6,000, which confirms it remains an attractive option for buyers. Turning to Lexus, the CT, the compact from the Premium brand, is the best-seller, with almost 8,000 units sold.

The Lexus RX, the first model from the brand with this type of drivetrain to arrive in Spain, is second in the ranking, with a figure of around 6,500 cars, while the Lexus NX totals 6,200 units. The remaining Lexus hybrids sold in Spain are split among the IS, GS, RC and LS models.

In total, 15 models are sold with hybrid drivetrains in Spain, making it the broadest and most complete hybrid range on the market. With the arrival of the next decade, in which production and supply of electricity-powered cars for getting around are expected to become established, we may see an even larger and more complete offering. Will this truly be the moment of the hybrid car’s breakthrough?
