Lexus has unveiled the new RX 500h F SPORT, which joins the brand’s family of hybrids. This large SUV offers innovations compared with other vehicles in the brand, thanks to the technology used in its design. A new hybrid engine, paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox and an independent rear axle. It uses the DIRECT4 full-time all-wheel-drive control system of Lexus.

The Lexus RX 500h F SPORT features a hybrid system with an innovative design. This is the first time the brand has used this configuration. Specifically, the front electric motor is positioned between the combustion engine and the automatic transmission, with a clutch on each side. This configuration helps it be more efficient, without losing any of the practicality of electric-only operation.

The most powerful Lexus RX

This model has the honour of being the most powerful version of Lexus’s hybrid family. The combined output of the combustion and electric motors is 371 CV, with a maximum torque of 550 Nm. This is the performance one would expect from a 3.0-litre V6 engine, yet it returns lower fuel consumption, between 8.0 and 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres.

The new transmission also improves on the previous eCVT and works more effectively. It reduces shift times and allows gear changes through the paddle shifters on the steering wheel.

Another innovation is the integration of a bipolar nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery. This technology allows more efficient use of charging and discharging. It also makes it possible to fit 1.4 cells in each slot, compared with traditional NiMH batteries.

The DIRECT4 system instantly adjusts the front and rear torque levels across all four wheels. This helps maintain stability and achieve optimal grip in any situation. It is positioned beneath the rear seat, so it does not reduce cabin space. In addition, the cooling system is quieter, making the battery more practical.

The GA-K platform offers a more rigid chassis and a lower centre of gravity, and its dynamic elements have been tuned to improve performance. The dynamic rear steering automatically adopts the best angle for turning the rear wheels.

At low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front ones, helping the car turn, while at higher speeds they turn in the same direction, giving the car more stability. The rear wheels’ steering angle is up to four degrees, which helps achieve greater stability.

Aesthetically, the Lexus RX 500h features 21-inch split-spoke wheels, wheel arches and sill protectors in the same colour as the bodywork. It also boasts piano black details, aerodynamic-profile bumpers, F SPORT badges and an exclusive mesh pattern on the front grille. The interior also has attractive elements that elevate the level of the model.
