Mazda celebrates the MX-5's 30th anniversary with a special edition unveiled at the Chicago Show
It’s been 30 years since the Mazda MX-5 made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show, and that is precisely where they are showing the 30th Anniversary edition that celebrates its birthday

As you will surely already know, this past Saturday the doors opened for yet another edition of the Chicago Auto Show, one of the most important events for the automotive industry both in North America and worldwide, with a long history that has only been interrupted by armed conflicts. Many brands circle this date in red on their calendars, an event that will run until the 18th of the month and where we can see interesting new releases.
It was at this very show that Mazda unveiled to the world in 1989 a new model that today has become a true icon of its lineup, an idea that began taking shape in the early 1980s with the aim of recalling the spirit of the British and Italian sports cars of the 1960s and 1970s: small, light, well balanced, powerful and with a reasonable price.

This is how the Mazda MX-5 was born, better known on the other side of the pond as the Miata, under the design philosophy Jimba Ittai of Mazda that has been maintained to this day with the arrival on the market of the current fourth generation, a generation that, incidentally, has recently been revisited by Mazda’s engineers to apply small improvements in terms of design but somewhat more profound ones in terms of power and dynamism, making it an even more fun sports car, if that is possible.
In 2019, and taking advantage of the Chicago Auto Show, Mazda wants to celebrate in grand style the 30th anniversary of the MX-5, a milestone that few models can boast of, especially considering more than one million units sold worldwide. To do so, they will show the MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition on their stand, a limited edition that will feature several aesthetic changes and greater equipment.

As you can see in the images, the Mazda MX-5 30th Anniversary will be distinguished by being offered exclusively in Racing Orange, a color that has also been used for the brake calipers signed by Brembo for the front axle and by Nissin for the rear axle, to which we must add Bilstein dampers and a limited-slip rear differential. The exterior crowning touch comes from the specially designed wheels inspired by competition, which are 17 inches in forged aluminum with a grey finish and have been created by the RAYS brand.
Inside we also find a theme similar to the exterior, with orange trim and inserts that combine with leather and Alcantara with orange stitching on elements such as the Recaro seats, the handbrake, the gear lever knob and the steering wheel. Added to this is the Bose sound system with nine speakers and pre-installation for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Production of the Mazda MX-5 30th Anniversary will be limited to just 3,000 units worldwide, of which only 50 will arrive in Spain starting in June at a price we do not yet know. It will be offered both in a white soft-top version and in the RF with a retractable hard top, both associated with the well-known 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine that delivers 184 CV and a torque of 205 Nm with a manual transmission.
