Mazda CX-50, a tough rival for the BMW X4?
The Mazda CX-50 could be unveiled at the end of this same year and will have a key goal: to go head-to-head with the very BMW X4.

We are used to car manufacturers always opting for premium or luxury finishes to convey the feeling of driving an exclusive product. However, reality is often different since, at times, it does not match the driving experience. Today, Mazda has done its part to compete directly with the most expensive German models. Its next challenge is the upcoming Mazda CX-50, a coupé SUV aiming to put the very BMW X4 on the ropes. Will it succeed?
The Mazda coupé SUV will be designed under the umbrella of Mazda’s latest Kodo design language. As in other models, the grille is quite large but well integrated and features a glossy lower edge. The front headlights are slimmer than those of the Mazda CX-5, and the bonnet will have a more pronounced curve. Unlike the Mazda CX-5, the future Mazda CX-50 will have a lower ground clearance and a roofline that slopes much more steeply at the rear side.

Mazda CX-50, will it go head-to-head with the BMW X4?
This is unlikely to benefit cargo space, but as we have seen with the BMW X4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé, many drivers will be willing to sacrifice that space in exchange for a less boxy and more exclusive SUV.
Everything points to the future Mazda CX-50 being powered by 3.0-litre diesel or petrol engines with six cylinders in line; they will possibly feature turbochargers. Additionally, a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid version could also reach the market. The more powerful versions will be complemented by a mild hybrid system that should improve the model’s efficiency.

As will be the case with the next generation of the Mazda6, the Mazda CX-50 will be rear-wheel drive, although an AWD option should also be offered. At the end of last year, the brand wanted to share more information about its new six-cylinder engine. It is worth noting that these strategic options are clearly aimed at the larger SUVs that aim to rival the German models. The Mazda CX-50 will be a very elegant model well worth taking a closer look at. Its official presentation could take place at the end of this same year. Will it achieve its goal?
